PREMIERE: Kyro - Dreams Never Die (Official Video)
Born in West London, KYRO is a rapper and producer influenced by artists such as J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay Z, Kanye West, Central Cee, and Headie One. His music has always sought to deliver a message, whether it's about his journey thus far, his own experiences, all with a touch of energy to set the crowd at his shows ablaze.
At 17 he first stepped into a recording a studio after crashing in on his friends session and has been addicted to the process of being a creative, conveying his emotions through music and painting pictures with his lyrics. He studied music at West Thames College and Hertfordshire University in order to hone his craft through collaborations with his peers, music artists, visual and other creative entity’s. He’s performed at festivals such as the Cambridge May Ball via their various campus', events at the Excel Centre and headlining his own shows on University campus' in Hertfordshire and colleges in London. In 2022 he sets out to do more of the same but on a far larger scale with his numerous releases scheduled to drop, alongside his album set to make a debut in 2023.
KYRO sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
Before music I was a street dancer and breakdancer, battling other crews much like what you saw in Step Up 2: The Streets! I’ve always had a love for music since I was young and because of dance I realised how music made me feel on a deeper level. However, creating it and songwriting allowed me to convey my emotions in the music, connect with people on a larger scale and understand myself so much more.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
My favourite artists that I always look too for inspiration are J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay Z, Kanye West, Central Cee and Headie One. However, there are so many artists that influence my style, especially in the UK and I feel like UK music for many years has been on the rise. Storytelling has always even a huge inspiration to me and my style. Artists like Dave, Giggs and Wretch 32 really do incredible things with their pen. In the future I’d love to work with all these artists but 2 I would love a collaboration with would be Krept and Konan, as I’ve always been envious of their ability to create consistent punchlines and flows effortlessly. A session with them would be a game changer.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
I am currently working on a lot of music and potentially an album for 2023. Currently I’m focused on releasing a lot of singles, music videos and with Dreams Never Die out now, this is just the beginning. My next song I’M TIRED is the next drop that I’m not sure people are ready for it!
4. How would you describe your sound?
My sound has a conscious element to it from the honesty in my lyrics but stays current with the trap sound and influence from drill.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My favourite moments of my career so far have been when the crowd has recited my lyrics back to me or responded without me giving them an indication or knowledge of the lyrics/song prior to presenting it to them. This has happened at many shows, especially my Excel centre show, the local carnivals and a few studio sessions where people have been in the room listening to me recording.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
To any rappers, singers or other creatives reading this, my advice to you would be love what you do and put out regardless of the views, likes and conversations. When you make what’s true to you and love, the right crowd is attracted to it and I believe the universe works with us on that. Patience plays a huge factor in everything we do and anything I’ve forced has always not popped or fallen short. I also believe in going out and getting what you want without the need for a label or backing; going against any form of limitation. Just make it happen!
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Artists that I love what they’re doing currently are Aiza Woods, from the group The Playground Junkies, who I’ve done loads of work with from music and videos (Directed and Edited “Dreams Never Die”). His latest song “PJ Riot” is out now via the The Playground Junkies’ Youtube, check that out! Another artist who’s sound I love is Marz Fay. Her sound is incredible and I feel like is something people need to watch out for. Her song “What’s The Motive” is dope and “Rockstar is out now” . Check them both out!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Currently I’m obsessed with DJ Khaled’s God Did album. I feel like guy that does an incredible job on bringing so many artists together to create anthems and great bodies of work. If the UK had a pioneer like that, that would be something special for our scene! Also, Jay Z’s verse on God Did is something else! A mixtape that’s been on rotation for awhile, is Central Cee’s “23” tape. Aside from his song “Doja” this guy keeps inspiring me from his cadence, energy and lyrics that never fail to spark my attention. Something that’s hard to ignore from “Doja” it self!
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
Aside from music I love Karate, training in the gym and Anime! Just to put it out there, the next arc of Demon Slayer is going to be nuts, Attack On Titan final season needs to start already and after all these years, Bleach is finally coming back!
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
In the studio there isn’t really things I can’t live without but I do need inspiration, good vibes around me and the note pad in my phone. That’s just how we get it done!
