Sabrina sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My mother was a singer/songwriter, a calypsonian on the island of Grenada. Because of this, my siblings and I experienced quite a musical household very early on. My dad also had an old box guitar named Betsy, and one of the silkiest voices I’ve ever heard. So there was no escaping my connection to music.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I have a long list of artists I’ve been inspired by. Off the top of my head I’ll say, Simi, Little Simz, Buju Banton, Tarrus Riley, Burna Boy, Yeba, Aurora.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
I’m coming to the UK in October of this year. I have an upcoming concert at Bushhall on the 27th of October and will be releasing my single 'Call Me’ on the 28th. Which was produced by an awesome Nigerian producer named Mystro.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I call it "Afro Caribbean Pop”. I think it’s such an accurate sonic representation of who I am.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My most recent proud moment is the release of my single “Learn To Love”. With every new song, I feel like I grow closer and closer to capturing my essence in this music. It’s doing quite well and because of this I’ll be coming to UK in October for my show. I love the growth, keeps me motivated.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Mad game is such a perfect description. If you’re just getting into music my advice to you would be to educate yourself as much as possible on the legalities. The more you know the more confidence you will have when faced with certain decisions and the less you leave yourself open to be taken advantage of.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Check out Olivia Dean. She’s a UK based artiste who I’ve had the recent pleasure of meeting/performing with and her music and unique voice is everything!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Simi’s TBH album, very light listening which is what I’ve been gravitating towards lately. And I’m always listening to Aurora’s “Different Kind Of Human".
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love quiet moments to myself. My daily life is quite busy and chaotic. So when I’m not actively working on my career, I like to keep it calm. I go to a water source, a river or waterfall preferably, I try to spend time with my family, and I’ve taken up reading again.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
My water bottle.
My songbook.
A Neumann U 87 Microphone.
