Kat G. - Where They At (Single) + 10 Questions
Kat G. is female rapper and singer Kathryn Miller based out of sky high Los Angeles. Arriving on the scene in 2017, Kat immediately showcased what she was all about, and that is locked in, catchy hip-hop tracks that draw attention while her unique and intoxicating flow and voice floor you.
Aiming to put female rappers on the mainstream map, Kat G.’s message is clear, honing in her personal life of being a single mother living in the modern world. She channels this in a clever, fun-filled and lighthearted way, following a similar musical style that has made so many male rappers so popular over the years in what is an ever expanding and broadening genre.
Since her debut single ‘Kitty Kat’, she has released a plethora of singles with the most successful being ‘Boss Ish’ released last year, where she really implements her voice and rapping prowess. Reminiscent of early Kanye, Kat G shows no fear and a real no holds barred approach in this more hard-hitting and appealing brand of hip-hop.
Kat G. now begins 2023 with her smoothest release yet in ‘Where They At’. A bouncy and beat-driven production drives the track from the off, and it gives Kat the perfect platform to unleash another stylish yet standout performance. There’s a real pop rap flow that is hook-ridden especially in the chorus, full of impressive rhythms that keeps you on your toes, seamlessly switching between rapping and singing.
You can hear the vintage 2000s era in her flow that was made so famous by her male counterparts, blended in with the modernised approach that is silky smooth and transcends beyond traditional hip-hop.
This unique combination is giving Kat G. something different and a recipe for success, and ‘Where They At’ is a song that will appease and appeal to lovers of rap, hip-hop, pop and everything in between. Her offering is witty where the melodies first seem to lend themselves to pop, but so quickly re-adapt and change throughout to the traditional and all encompassing hip-hop sound you take away from it at the end.
Kat G. sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
Music was my escape from growing up in a difficult childhood. I used to sneak cd’s that my mom thought were christian music into my walkman and zone out.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I’d love to work with Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Dwele, Russ and Chloe. I love artists who are all about the music. My early influences include Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, Tribe Called Quest, and the Roots. Of course I would also be ecstatic to work with any of them! I tend to keep an ear to the ground on what many female rappers are doing from golden era to today.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
I’m planning on releasing several topic-driven EPs along with pop tracks full of vibes. I’ll be doing a lot of video projects this year and tons of unique dance stuff throughout. I also plan on exploring more of my R&B side, since I catch myself singing all the time throughout my day.
4. How would you describe your sound?
Old world rap aesthetics meet melodic stylised genre-bending thoughtful sonic exploration. 5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
Filming the music video for “For a Minute” was pretty huge for me. Having an entire team get behind my message, and using choreography, visual aesthetic and style to bring it to life brought community and culture together. It’s really this embodied activism that, if I were to die tomorrow, I would feel proudest to call a part of my legacy.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
How many pages do I have? Don’t underestimate promo. We all want our music to blow up organically and it’s this age of information where most people are inundated with media due to the proliferation of the internet and social media. The music industry alone has changed so much because of this, so make sure you’re getting your strategies from people who get that. Collaborate and get out there if you can. When you feel discouraged, place your focus on what you can control, even if its just 15 minutes a day spent on your music. Be a good neighbor because people like supporting people who are kind. Give yourself credit for all of your accomplishments. Visualize what you want to create in your music career and choose positive thoughts that support your goal. Make peace with your higher power.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
R&B vocalist Alexandria is a sultry LA singer, she’s basically an aural Valium (can I say that?) with Mariah’s range and a fierce pen.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
I’ve been enjoying Saweetie and SZAs latest projects.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love movement! On any given day you might find me boxing, dancing, jogging or doing yoga. I love hanging out with my kiddo, researching new cryptos, checking out fashion shows and galleries, and spending time in nature.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
A comfy couch, good vibes, and a responsive thermostat.
