Seafood Sam - Afros In The Wind (EP)

Hailing from Long Beach California, burgeoning west-coast artist Seafood Sam shares his hotly anticipated EP ‘Afros In The Wind’, released today via drink sum wtr.

‘Afros In The Wind’ is a cruising collection of organic hip-hop with a street edge, showcasing Sam’s sophisticated palate, infused with elements of jazz and R&B. When listening to Sam’s music, you’ll hear that he possesses the rare gift of evoking nostalgic feelings without feeling dated—almost like nostalgia for a fondly remembered past and a vision for a vividly imagined future at the same time. Following the birth of Sam’s son, the new EP explores themes of fatherhood, freedom and family. Alongside his usual bravado, across the 7 tracks Sam imparts gems of wisdom and invokes ancestors in the song titles.

Seafood Sam details the story behind the EP - “Afros In The Wind is simple - it’s about Black Freedom. Being free. When people use the phrase ‘let your hair down’, they don’t get it. ’Fros don’t come down. They catch wind. You hear the title and you see the image”.

The release arrives with a visualiser for EP highlight, “Luv Baby Soft” a luxurious track that gleams with vintage synthesisers and yearning saxophones.

Listeners were initially introduced to the EP with the sunshine-flecked single “‘86 Carolina West”. Sam is backed by a breezy instrumental and a fittingly radiant music video, shooting hoops in the hazy height of summer and weaving through verses whilst cruising down the suburban city streets.  It’s a single that complements motion, whether that’s cruising in a Chevy lowrider on a sunlit day or expertly skating backward at the roller rink by night.

A product of Long Beach, the place that gave us artists as varied as Snoop Dogg and Sublime or War and Warren G, Sam’s sophistication reflects the diversity of his hometown. After releasing a steady stream of projects to feed those fans over the years, Seafood Sam is ready to introduce listeners to the next steps in his evolution as an artist and man with an upcoming LP arriving next year, set to be released via newly formed cult label drink sum wtr, which aims to bring forth unique voices in Hip-Hop, R&B, and adjacent sounds, part of the All Flowers Group and Secretly family.  Stay tuned for more.
