Selassie - RETRO FUTURE KID (EP)

Following ‘YIDDY’, ‘SYMBOLS’ ‘AGUA’ and ‘MMSH’ which collectively received support from tastemakers such as Jack Saunders, Jamz Supernova, Bonafide Mag, Paper Mag, Notion & Wonderland, Ghanaian-born, Berlin-based artist Selassie prepares to release his intoxicating forthcoming project ‘RETRO FUTURE KID’ out via XYZ123 Records on 16th November 2023.

Selassie is a multifaceted artist who brings colour into the world with dynamic melodies, painting murals with his honest lyrics. Approaching his music from an endearing state of naivety, Selassie is at heart still the kid from Dansoman, walking through the world, influenced by the brush strokes and contours of his life. With his journey being heavily inspired by "breaking the stereotypes and the mentality of kids from Africa to Europe” ‘RETRO FUTURE KID’ tells the tale of a self-acceptance and responsibility.

He explains: ‘It’s about a kid growing out of a dark place. Someone who just started learning how to be proud of his lil achievements in life. Seeing myself in my two year old daughter, a work on my inner child. This EP was created between her birth and her second birthday.’ Not hindered by categories, Selassie’s playful approach and nonchalant poetic delivery incorporates African melodies to his unique outsider Hip-Hop. From the cascading kaleidoscopic tones of opening track ‘FLOWER BOYZ’, which trickles into the heartfelt dulcet tones of focus track ‘MAMAS BOI’, before culminating in the laid back groove of closing track ‘YIDDY’, Selassie creates mesmerising technicolour sonic textures throughout. A truly intriguing and alluring listening experience.
