DAYASOUL sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1.So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

It all began in church! My earliest memories of music stemmed from my love for Jesus. Since then it’s blossomed through everyday experiences, particularly in life and love - you’ll hear that a lot in my music. I love showcasing just how important my faith is to me, it pretty much gets me through everything and ultimately ends up being the bedrock to a lot of my songs.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Honestly? I have quite a few. The first would have to be Rukhsana Merrise. She is an amazing songwriter and an incredible artist all round. I really love the way her music sounds sonically.

Next would have to be Little Simz, apart from producing epic music, I think she has astounding performance charisma, you really can’t miss it. I feel like if we ever did work together, we’d create nothing short of a masterpiece.

Last but definitely not least would have to be Adele. I would not only want to make music with her, but I would love to just sit down and write with her. Her lyrical penmanship is out of this world! I feel like we both know how to capture beautiful emotive images with our songs, we’re storytellers so to speak.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I’m happy to say that this will be my most consistent year of music releases yet. I’ve worked really hard on several projects and really wanted to showcase a variety of sounds, moods and topics with my new songs.  I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working so hard towards and hopefully you end up loving them just as much as I do. That being said, in the words of Drake - don’t switch on me, I got big plans.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as cinematic. As I mentioned earlier, I use my songs to tell stories. When I write my music it’s about the feeling, the message and the illustrations that come with it. There is a narrative at hand, much like your favourite movie or series.

5. What’s your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

My proudest moment is hearing my music on the radio or hearing it sung back to me at shows by the audience - as much as I always wish for these things to happen, it always leaves me mind blown whenever it does.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Really love music as your art form. That’ll more than likely keep you motivated when you don’t like the game!

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

There is definitely one artist that I really like. She has a lot of passion and it shows through her music. She also has a different sound which I think works as an advantage for her. If you couldn’t guess already I’m talking about myself haha!

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

All things Lizzy McAlpine, Amy Winehouse & Samara Joy

9. What do you like to do when you’re not making music?

I’m a big foodie. So you’ll catch me happily eating and cooking some good food. I  love cozying up with a movie marathon at hand, I’m also quite competitive, so playing board games-and winning is my fave pastime.

10. What was the inspiration behind your song Rabbit Hole?

It’s an honest ode to the struggles that we face trying to navigate life and purpose. The world is moving so fast these days and it's very easy to get caught up in what you have and haven’t done while questioning whatever it is that you are currently doing. A lyric from the song is “underwater, need the surface.” That line consists of me being completely transparent about what it’s like to feel overwhelmed and needing a break, or a release if you will. I wrote this from a vulnerable space about my relationship with Jesus, I felt like a lot of people would be able to resonate with the lyrics. It’s very easy to think you’re failing when plans aren’t going your way, but I’ll say that everyone should be easy on themselves, you’re just fine. Celebrate the small wins and be patient. Take your time, everything will work out when and how it’s supposed to.

11. Name three things you can’t live without when in the studio?

My songwriting book, my laptop, and definitely snacks!
