Dizzy Goku - Nightmares (Single) + 10 Questions

London-based upcoming artist of North-African origins Dizzy Goku is dropping his first release of the year called Nightmares, which is the leading single off his upcoming homonymously titled EP.

Dizzy Goku is a singer-songwriter who blends pop with R&B, trap, afro and neo soul. His music is inspired by his dreams, fantasies, experiences and favourite anime shows. His unique sound has so far caught the eye of international artists such as BOJ, who invited him to open his London show in October, and also various booking agents in London and Malta who secured him spots on the lineups for shows such as The Door, Sweatbox Live 6, Rcrdshop Live & Rcrdshop Fam Jam, Earth Garden Festival and many others.

Dizzy Goku’s upcoming release Nightmares is an insight into the dark side of his reality as he deals with insomnia and bad dreams, adding an introspective glimpse into his process of gaining clarity and overcoming his fears. Nightmares is a slow jam with an addictive melody and catchy chorus featuring a soothing sound powered by Dizzy Goku’s tranquil vocals and showcasing his raw emotions.

The cover art was also executed by the artist from scratch and it aims to compliment the song by offering a visual representation of what listening to Nightmares feels like. His love for anime is very present not only in this single release but also in the EP, playing a pivotal role for Dizzy in expressing himself.

This year is set to be the year where Dizzy Goku cements his place within the London music scene and taps into new audiences with Nightmares.

Dizzy sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I believe that dreams can manifest at any given moment as long as your intentions are genuine, and that’s precisely how it began. In 2019, I woke up one day, and I felt the urgent desire to reconnect with my True Self. I didn’t plan to pursue music. It just happened. I was curious and amazed by the power of music to engage with people’s subconscious and, most notably, by its ability to create an ethereal experience.

2. What has your music journey been like so far?

Thrilling. I am blessed to be working with the same people that believed in me when I first began in 2019. They continue to inspire and challenge me with every new project.

3. What's the story behind “Nightmares”?

Culturally, we are very superstitious, and we believe nightmares hold more powerful meanings than most dreams, and as such, we tend to fixate on them. I wrote this song at a time when I was experiencing a lot of recurring nightmares. I felt abandoned and overwhelmed by fear.

4. The visual concept of “Nightmares” is strongly linked to anime, what can you tell us about that?

I created the cover art for Nightmares, which introduces an extended message to the song that emphasizes the presence of the Shadow. The Shadow can be interpreted as negative emotions, thoughts, or memories that haunt us and lay dormant within our subconscious. For this song, the Shadow is interpreted as the sin. A lot of the recurring nightmares I was having were memories from the past, where I was slowly becoming a slave to my desires and actively engaging in bad habits. The guilt was too much to bear, and I felt unworthy of God’s forgiveness.

I am a huge fan of Anime, so it just felt right to use that style to interpret my art.

5. What other projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

Nightmares is the first track of an entire EP titled Nightmares and Fantasies (The title might change upon release). I will share more information regarding the release of the EP in May.

6. How would you describe your sound?

I aim to be a musical chameleon-like one of my greatest inspirations, Mac Miller. I don’t want to be restricted by genre, but for now, I could be labeled an Alternative Artist. I blend genres such as Trap, RnB, Rock, Afro, and Pop.

7. What are your goals for this year?

My goals for this year are to release my first EP successfully, create an audience base in London and perform at more festivals during the summer.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I’m currently listening to:

Album 1 - Since I Have A Lover by 6LACK

Album 2 - Sincerely For You by Jacquees

Album 3 - SOS - SZA

Album 4 - Twelve Carrot Toothache by Post Malone.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I like many things. I like drawing on my tablet, I like having coffee in the morning, and I enjoy playing video games like Apex Legends with the squad.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

I don’t need much in the studio: coffee, water, and my phone.
