Millie Mountain - Like Water (EP) Review

Like Water’ is the second EP released by Millie Mountain, produced by German Hip-Hop producer Space Windu.

Millie Mountain is a 23-year-old Brit school graduate from Brixton and a rising artist in the Neo Soul / R&B and Jazz circuit around her hometown of London. Her notoriety in the scene has steadily arisen since the release of her debut album ‘Blurred Out Faces’, which has now been streamed in over 100 countries and received support from BBC Introducing.

Millie has garnered an impressive support network and collaborated with well-known names in the UK Hip-Hop community, such as The Mouse Outfit, with their track in collaboration with Gemini Candid, ‘Feel’, gaining 264,000 views on Spotify to date - and counting. Millie will be joining the notorious group on tour this summer, boasting Boomtown Festival Chapter 2, Noisily and Love Summer Festivals, The Jam Jar Bristol, The Blues Kitchen Manchester, The Fox and Firkin London, as well as the main stage at UB40 Home Coming with Soul II Soul - as just a few of her upcoming live performances.

The ‘Like Water’ EP takes me back to a time of diamante gems and chunky brown belts on low-rise denim skirts. ‘Like Water’ has an old-school charm reminiscent of the late ’90s/early 2000s Erykah Badu and Mary J. Blige. Millie’s velvet-like vocals across the three tracks that make up ‘Like Water’ are comparable to Greentea Peng, Amy Winehouse, Cleo Sol and Ceeopatra. Her delicious vibrato makes every note feel like honey. Warm and inviting with a huge splash of sensuality. Harnessing her skills in spoken word, ‘Like Water’ shows Millie not only effortlessly demonstrating her vocal range, but her talents in rap, too. Fans of Little Simz will no doubt be won over by her unmistakable South London dialect.

When asked to define her musical style, Millie says ‘I don’t box myself up or categorise my sound or the art that I make. I can make anything from Soul, Jazz, R&B to Hip-Hop, Indie-Rock. There really is no limit to what I can create or what I wish to put out there.’ Showing her creativity knows no bounds.

The three tracks ‘Lost Minds’, ‘Can You?’ and finally, the title track ‘Like Water’ are all made up of intriguing elements that make them sound individual, yet weave together to tell a coherent story of self-discovery, self acceptance and the ability to be whoever you want to be at any given moment.

Millie proves yet again that she is talented in what she does. Her music is authentic, laid back and 'cool' - without even having to try. There's a real sense of being unbothered underlying each track. Millie doesn’t seem to give a shit about whether you like her or not - which is perhaps all the more reason we want to be a part of her journey.

Millie Mountain's latest EP ‘Like Water’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
