J-Kari ft: Verbz - Intoxicated (Single)

Brighton based Rapper, producer and singer J-Kari is beginning to expand his artistic endeavours even more so by looking at his own flaws and insecurities with an brutally honest and hard hitting perspective on his mental health.

After the previous success of his collaboration with SBK and Jed on their energetic track “Woah” demonstrating flawless flows and hard hitting bars. J-Kari has now taken a different route “closer to his art” and is making a large first step in the realm of jazz boom bap. This time around the 23 year old has teamed up with Verbz who is recognised for being signed to the prestigious and historic High Focus and making music with legends such as Mr Slipz, Dogger, and Mindstate.

J-Kari describes intoxicated as his experience with disassociation and using alcohol and smoking to become present just to be able to feel something in the mundane, numb states he has been existing through. The captivating lyricist said he wrote this song in a time of being aware of what he needs to change and to escape his vices to become present but remained in a state of peaceful procrastination and uncomfortable clarity. J-Kari went on to explain “it’s like I was just so used to being so heavily disassociated all the time I was at a weird peace with it”.

The song starts with a catchy hook made up of a dose of the truth and hard hitting relatable statements to those who deal with their own problems through their own vices. The start of the song has started to gain a lot of attention on tikitok and is bringing well deserved attention to the quickly ascending rapper. J-Kari is well and truly pushing boundaries with creating a sing along enticing hook relating himself and his own issues to this modern generation of youth who don’t know themselves and look towards alcohol and smoking to find their place in the world essentially embracing escapism.

With the song then leading into J-Kari’s first verse giving an in depth self reflection. Starting his verse with admitting his prayer has been answered. He is able to see what needs to be done and how to change for the better in his current bleak circumstances mentally even through the stages of questioning his own existence. However he then goes on to explain how accustomed he is to knowing how to fix his problems but not acting upon it due to being so comfortable with the uncomfortable state of disassociation he feels and knows so well. He then goes further on to speak about how he has come to accept how he feels in this groundhog day cycle and the fact of how through this state he has been able to flourish musically and grow as an artist. The second verse J-Kari goes on to express how he seems to need a dip in his life to get back on track to a life path leading to some form of normality. The verse continues to open up into the field of admittance to not knowing who he is without his vices although he is aware they are of no benefit to his life.

Using beautifully poetic-like rhyme schemes he is able to capture the demons that surface for healing when this song is played due to the relatability in the song to this type of dystopian living. J-Kari’s verse smoothly transitions into one of the names you think of when asked who is pushing the uk boom bap sound? High Focus’ very own Verbz delivers a slick and smooth feeling verse perfectly captivating the songs tone and feeling, giving a very well suited outro to the song. The south London rapper enhances the moment of being fully locked in with his undeniably technical rhyme schemes and relatable bars to bring you into the song's emotion and feeling even more so.
