PREMIERE: Speech Debelle -  Wayward (Official Video)

Speech Debelle drops new single Wayward from her forthcoming album, with the Aiden Harmitt-Williams directed video which is out on Thursday.

Of Wayward, Speech says the song "has two meanings: the shadow self and the masculine-feminine energy. I wanted to wear a suit to show myself in my masculine energy, learning and leaning into the feminine in me, played by dancer, Rónké Olágúnjú."

Music video director Aiden Harmitt-Williams commented: "Immediately upon having the idea for the song, I wanted us to shoot it in one take-style, having it flow and ebb as the song does."

British rapper Speech Debelle won the Mercury Prize for her debut album ‘Speech Therapy’ in 2009, beating the likes of Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and La Roux.

Her 2012 Kwes-produced sophomore album ‘Freedom Of Speech’ commanded further critical acclaim expanding Speech’s captivating flair for poetic testimonies, playful narratives and dynamic rumination on power, politics and pleasure. She innovatively accompanied her third album, ‘Tantil before I Breathe,’ with a cookbook and memoir in 2017.

Her highly-anticipated fourth album ‘Sunday Dinner On A Monday’ (out 9 June 2023) examines family, friends, lineage, and ancestral DNA through the lens of afro-futurism.

The track and video both officially drop tomorrow, but Wordplay are giving you exclusive access to the video today, enjoy!
