Maisy Grace - Based On A True Story (Album)
Hailing from the scenic coastal region of Cornwall, Maisy infuses her music with the essence of her beloved home. With her enchanting vocals effortlessly blending with smooth beats, this album undoubtedly captures the feeling of a breathtaking sunset on a warm summer evening.
Maisy takes listeners on a musical journey through life's ups and downs. She fearlessly pours her personal experiences and emotions into her lyrics, inviting fans into her intimate world of thoughts and reflections. At just eighteen years old, Maisy proves her prowess as a singer-songwriter, captivating audiences with her mature and soulful sound.
The album enters beautifully with the somewhat doleful "I Never Needed Anyone" and slightly more upbeat "Break It Down," which already garnered success as Maisy's 2023 singles. If it were 10 years ago the latter would have been made into an excellent dubstep tune. These tracks set the tone for what's to come—an album brimming with catchy melodies and honest storytelling.
“Running Away” is slow and soul searching again. To me it sounds a little bit like Teardrop by Massive Attack, to give you an idea.
“Show Me” brings some phatter beats, it’s the meatiest track on the album. It feels like she can unleash her voice just a touch more on this one.
Drawing inspiration from her deep connection with surfing and the ocean, Maisy delivers "Something Different," a track that perfectly encapsulates her love for the sport. You can feel the adrenaline and freedom of riding the waves as her music washes over you.
Embracing some electronica it’s “Reverse” bringing the bleeps and squeaks. They counterpoint nicely with her very organic voice.
Steppin up steppin in we’ve got some liquid DnB on track 7 “Circles”, some nice trumpet going on in this track too. Definitely feeling this one.
"Feel Brand New" is a chilled number. Maybe written for relaxing on the beach after a long hard day of surfing?
“Don’t mess with me” is a beef track, calling out someone who did her wrong. It’s classy and defiant and, I’m sure, relatable to many.
This is going to sound a bit odd but the final track on the album really is evocative of the sea. I think it’s the violin. If the song finished with the sound of waves and seagulls you wouldn’t question it.
"Based On A True Story" is an impressive debut that showcases Maisy's talent and potential. Her ability to blend her rich voice with a variety of beats, I think, will see her collaborate with a lot of different artists in future as well as enjoy a bright solo career. Being so young she’s certainly got plenty of time for both!
