Something different today at Wordplay, those who have followed us for a while will know we like to stir things up with the U.K festivals and call them out when they don’t curate diverse lineups. It’s well known that women musicians rarely headline festivals, regardless of their music topping the charts and regular radio play not to mention their dedicated fanbase.

So we have a few things up our sleeve, firstly we wanted to highlight the importance of women headlining. How do you think it feels for young women growing up in the U.K only seeing men in the top spots? How do they aspire to achieve this status when they rarely see it happening?

Bring on Black Pink, a global powerhouse, a true female force to be reckoned with and one that can hold their own in front of a crowd 65,000 strong. This summer they headlined Hyde Park’s BST festival as the first K-Pop band to ever do so in the U.K. and people flocked from all over the world to be here.

We decided to send a young women by the name of Ellie-May along to the festival, she’s a huge Black Pink fan and at 13 years old this was her first festival experience. Working alongside Outside Organisation who gave her (and her Mum) the VIP treatment and made sure she had an unforgettable experience (we can’t thank them enough).

So firstly, and most importantly, did you have fun at BlackPink?

It was the BEST first concert ever I had lots of fun and the whole set up was amazing, I felt safe and at ease the entire time. 

Black Pink are the first K-Pop group to have headlined a major U.K festival, how does it feel knowing you were there during this historic moment?

It feels good that I was able to experience Black Pink make history and I am so happy for them all. The whole experience was amazing.    

Do you have a favourite song? Or a few?

Boombayah has to be my main favourite but I also love lovesick girls and playing with fire.

Do you have a favourite member of the band?

I love all of the members of the band equally and I have favourite things about them all. I Like all the members for different reasons, for example:

I like Rose because she’s so kind and talented, with an amazing voice.

Lisa is so good at dancing and rapping, she’s also silly, which shows she’s being herself.

Jisoo is so caring and I love that she feels confident enough to show it, she’s also another amazing singer.

Jennie cares so much and is a fantastic singer and dancer and I love how funny she can be. 

Lastly I just love how they all appear to look after each other. 

What does it mean to you to see women headlining festivals like this?

I find it very inspiring to see them get to where the are today. I’ve been a Blink (a Black Pink fan) since almost the beginning in 2017/18. It’s so empowering and I wish to see this happen more, especially here in the U.K.

What other women in music would you like to see in the top position?

Anne Marie and Olivia Rodrigo 

What are those Pink Lights in the crowd? They look like heart hammers.

Yes, They are light up hammers in the shape of hearts, pretty cool however they where £65 each and not really in my price range. 

Lastly, would you go again if they return to the U.K?

I would go every day if possible!
