With ‘Jack In The Box’, WhyDee is showing and proving exactly why he is one to watch for the future of UK rap music.

WhyDee sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

It was my mum. We have always had a studio at home since I was born so I was surrounded by music. My mum is a musician, always singing, and I watched her create, travel the world and make her mark with her music. When she stopped performing and packed up the recording studio we had at home, I wanted to encourage her to get back into it. So, when I was about 12, I pulled everything out of the garage and rebuilt the studio by watching YouTube tutorials. She let me order new equipment from Amazon, and I set up a new studio. I taught myself how to engineer, recorded her a few times, but she didn’t think my skills were quite there yet. That pushed me to keep practicing on myself, and I discovered my love for producing, rapping, and creating music.

2. Who are some artists that influence you, and who would you like to work with in the future?

I’ve got a few! Central Cee, Playboi Carti, Drake, and many others inspire me.

3. What projects do you have coming up, and can you share any details?

I’ve got a lot of music ready to go. Right now, I’m focusing on releasing as many singles as possible. I’ve also got a group project with The Charvas, plus a few shows and club tours around the UK. We’re planning to head to the USA soon to link up with other content creators and collaborate on both music and content.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Some people say it's melodic drill or UK Rap.

5. What's your proudest moment so far as an artist?

My first release, Jack in The Box, is definitely a big one for me. My first performance a club in Swansea and recently performing at Reading Festival.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who are trying to navigate the music industry?

Learn as much as you can about both the music and the business side. It’s really important to know how to record yourself, and just keep practicing and experimenting until you know your music is solid.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Yeah, definitely me—WhyDee! But seriously, the UK has so much talent right now. Check out AntsLive, LeoStayTrill, Teebo to name a few.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I don't really have a playlist in general but when I do, I listen to Playboi Carti, Central Cee. I’m also going back to learn from old-school legends like Method Man, DMX, and others.

9. What do you like to do when you’re not making music?

I’m always creating. I spend a lot of time making content—filming, editing, linking up with the rest of The Charvas at the studio, or just working on my craft at home.

10. Name three things you can’t live without in the studio.

My laptop, water, and headphones.
