Joshua J - Left of Me (Single)
Joshua J unveils new single ‘Left of Me’ - a tale of self-discovery and soul searching. Produced by Ketta, Left of Me is a beautifully crafted Caribbean-Afrobeat experience that chronicles Joshua J’s quest for self-discovery yet offers solace as he navigates the complexities of identity and reclaims his voice.
The track will be available on all platforms April 19th via Joshua J’s own label CMP (Custom Made Passion).
Left of Me is born from an introspection of Joshua J’s early life where he spent a significant amount of time moving around the Dutch foster care system. As he grew older he began to learn more about who his father was and his deep-rooted history in the Ghanaian music community. Joshua J has embarked on a journey of exploration through his Caribbean and African-infused bloodline alongside the backdrop of culture he’s been surrounded by in Amsterdam.
Joshua J Shares: "Growing up, I spent a significant part of my childhood searching for the missing pieces of my identity. 'Left Of Me' takes me back to those moments of uncertainty, where I didn't quite know what was left of me. This song is a journey of rediscovery, of piecing myself back together after losing sight of who I truly was."
Born in Rotterdam, before moving to St. Martin to join his family at six months old––his earliest memories are of his grandmother’s toy piano––which he would obsessively tinker away on, becoming the initial spark for his eventual path in music. After returning back to the Netherlands at just one and a half years old due to his mother’s struggles with drug addiction he entered foster care, where music quickly became a firsthand form of expression for him. Joshua J released his first album, "1998," exactly six years after his grandmother passed away. The project reflected on his experiences growing up in foster care and served as a tribute to his mother.
The debut received high praise from outlets such as Pitchfork, EARMILK, Complex UK, VICE and more.
Shortly after the release, he began touring as a support act for artists Anderson.Paak, Saba, and Col3trane before the pandemic paused all live events. While his earlier releases focused on dancehall, hip hop and barebones R&B, Joshua J’s new sound signals an intentional shift towards an even wider range of genres reflective of his polymathic creative approach.
