Why Kai - Tourist (Album)

Why Kai is the moniker of Oslo based composer and producer Kai von der Lippe & drummer Elias Tafjord. Renown for their visually unique live shows (which utilise live-controlled interactive visuals with input from cameras on stage, and MIDI-triggered robots) the duo creates carefully composed and evolving pieces where sounds from the jazz and improvisation scenes are seamlessly blended with danceable rhythms, deep bass, as well as incorporating field recordings.

Following their debut EP ‘Deep Fishing’, released via Jazzland Recordings in 2021, the pair now return with their first album offering ‘Tourist’, due for release on May 3rd via Boomboy Records. ‘Tourist’ is a cohesive blend of outsider-house, jazz and chamber music, filled with acoustic and electronic elements intertwining with the foley of sound recordings capturing the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Kai explains: “I am interested in making melodies and hooks the listener can remember and recognize, without being able to reproduce or sing after listening for the first time. I want to produce the feeling of listening to someone improvise a melody, repeating themes, making subtil rhythmic and melodic variations, and moving them around in the tonality” Created with the intention of providing an alluring soundtrack to explore a new city to, throughout the record soft melodies and harmonies intertwine with a continuous club energy groove providing the perfect lifepulse for journeying deeper into unknown territories.
