Everthe8 + BMB SpaceKid - The Source (EP)

In a testament to the power of music to transcend borders, languages and limitations, Russian hip-hop staples Everthe8 and BMB SpaceKid have joined forces for their collaborative project The Source – released via Bombay Records.

Recorded entirely in ten days in Saint Petersburg, The Source plays back like a definitive love letter to the signature stylings of mid-2000’s hip-hop. With echoes of 9th Wonder and Alchemist era production underlying an homage to the lyrical stylings of greats such as Slum Village or Foreign Exchange, The Source captures hip-hop nostalgia in a way that is impossible to ignore.Across eight melodic, beat-driven productions, Everthe8 and BMB SpaceKid united fatefully to craft the EP, which intentionally defies contemporary trends through its old-school production choices. “We went against all the mass trends that can be heard nowadays. I wanted to make this material last for a long time,” SpaceKid explained.

With all tracks almost exclusively written by Everthe8 and BMB SpaceKid (who also produced the EP), additional production credits include well-known multi-instrumentalists Koyla, who played piano on “Grand Intro” and “Lemonade Tears”, as well as saxophonist Dmitry Korotovskikh who delivers a jazzy, soulful solo on “Genius of Love.”

Alongside the release, The Source is expanded by a highly insightful, twenty-minute documentary, intimately capturing the creative process of producing the record through candid studio footage spliced with revealing commentary from both Everthe8 and BMB SpaceKid.

As two gifted talents both born and raised in some of the toughest neighborhoods in Russia, their ascensions to becoming instrumental artists in Saint Petersburg's dynamic and expanding hip-hop scene makes The Source a thrilling project on both a cultural and professional level.

Over the years, BMB SpaceKid has risen as one of Russian hip-hop’s most notable exports, counting Dr. Dre, Anderson.Paak, DJ Premier, GoldLink, SOULECTION, Raekwon and Illa J as just some of the talent he has crafted beats for. Alongside high praise from notable tastemakers like Complex, Hypebeast, Wonderland and Okayplayer for his productions, SpaceKid has also put together bespoke mixes for the likes of Jamz Supernova as well as a legendary Boiler Room set.

Meanwhile, Everthe8 has become somewhat of a local hero for his success story, flying the flag for his country’s indigenous artists. Born in Buryatia, a republic in Eastern Siberia, the Spotify RADAR Russia artist lifts his name from the code 008000, which is used to designate the color green in the RGB color model. Noted for his ability to deliver masterful bars in English – a language he is not fluent in – Everthe8’s debut album, Ulan-Ude Summer 16, saw him instantly connecting with a global audience through his touching story, authenticity and deep-rooted love of classic hip-hop.

With The Source representing a union between two of Russian hip-hops most beloved talents, Everthe8 and SpaceKid’s ability to fuse their signature styles into one cohesive project is sure to delight music fans and hip-hop afficionados across the globe.
