Rising star Tyler Lewis returns with her highly anticipated debut EP, ‘wait ‘til she gets her heart broken,’ including lead track ‘under the rug.’ Tyler already created major waves with her infectious debut single "downtime" and follow-up track ‘fly on the wall’ earlier this year, both of which highlighted her undeniable capability of creating a gorgeous blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics and cemented her as an artist ready to make her mark in 2024.
“This body of work is so special to me, not only because it’s my first, but also because it really is like a diary. I just can’t wait for people to hear it and through that discover the start of TYLER LEWIS as an artist. It’s just super exciting!” Tyler shares.
The EP, with MNEK as executive producer, features six tracks, and lead single ‘under the rug,’ a funk-infused anthem inspired by the relatable struggles of confronting unresolved issues in relationships. Co-written with producer RELYT and songwriters Nina Nesbitt and Joe Gosling, the song showcases Tyler’s ability to wear her heart on her sleeve with intoxicating key changes and velvety runs. Each track adds a new colour to the landscape of Tyler’s voice.
This project is a mix of love songs, sultry anthems, and emotionally honest tracks that highlight Tyler’s versatility in effortlessly weaving R&B, pop and soul together. Tracks like ‘never been in love’ and ‘eventually’ offer a taste of her emotional depth and vocal range, while ‘people watching’ captures her fascination with the lives of others.
Debut single ‘downtime’ saw Tyler delving into the introspective musings of an introvert navigating a bustling world. Praised for its vibrant production and rich harmonies, the track marked her bold debut , securing over half a million global streams so far and garnering acclaim across the board. Great support from NME, Clash, Notion, Wonderland, New Wave, Colors blog and more. It was selected as the BBC 1Xtra Music Introducing Tune of the Week and received plays on Radio 1 by Mollie King, Victoria Jane, and Jack Saunders. But it doesn’t stop there – Tyler was chosen as Spotify’s RADAR artist and also featured and selected in ‘Apple Music x Rebecca Judd’s’ Ascending Artist series , as well as in VEVO’s DSCVR New Music.
Tyler's background is as diverse as her music. With Sri Lankan, South African, Dutch, and Portuguese heritage, she began her musical journey at age 9, winning a school talent contest with a rendition of Mariah Carey's "Hero." Influenced by artists like Luther Vandross, Duran Duran, and Whitney Houston, Tyler aims to infuse the soul and R&B influences of her idols with a contemporary twist. Fast forward to the age of 22, Tyler has been able to experience the feeling of doing the same for others in a solo live setting, supporting Kiana Ledé on tour at KOKO last year, performing as part of Mahalia Presents nights, and supporting Leigh-Anne’s sold out headline show at Lafayette in June 2024.
Her collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist and producer MNEK has been pivotal in her musical journey. Working closely with MNEK and other emerging writers, producers, and artists, Tyler has honed her unique voice and songwriting skills. Her dedication and talent have not gone unnoticed, earning her recognition from notable artists like Becky Hill, Tyla, Yebba, Jessie J, Flo, Mahalia, and Kamille.
As Tyler continues to carve her path with authenticity and passion, Tyler Lewis is undoubtedly one to watch. Tyler Lewis sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember (alongside almost every single other person on this planet) but my earliest memories are all of my mum blasting Mariah Carey and Babyface on the CD player white growing up. That really exposed me early to some of the greatest songs ever made.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
SZA has the most conversational writing style and I’m obsessed with it. Silk sonic is at the top of my list when it comes to influences for the most obvious reasons. THEY’RE JUST TOP TIER and I would genuinely give my left arm to meet them. Babyface is someone I’m dying to work with purely as I’ve been listening to his music my whole life so it would be really full circle for me.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
My new EP called ‘wait till she gets her heart broken,’ which is very exciting and it has some fresh songs and vibes on there!
The tracks explore some interesting topics and I a feel like this EP is a perfect representation of me as a whole. It’s my first ‘biggish’ body of work, so I’m really looking forward to hearing what people think about what I’ve been working on for essentially 3 years! SCARY!!!
4. How would you describe your sound?
I would say my sound is nostalgic but also fresh. Well, that’s what I strive for, at least.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My proudest moment would be supporting Kiana Lede at KOKO in December. It was super scary and I had never been so nervous but I did it and genuinely loved every second of it.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
I’m really new to the game so I don’t wanna start trying to share pointless wisdom because I also have a lot to learn. But one thing I have learnt is that patience is key. Also, it’s a job as well as a hobby, so like every other job, music will suck at times. But the times it doesn’t suck are when you realise you have the best job ever!
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Osa is an incredible vocalist and his EP ‘Nebula’ plays non-stop in my headphones.
Rucci is another really sick artist whose music I rinse non-stop.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
An evening with Silk Sonic.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love to eat. I also love movies, so I’m always watching something. But I’m usually binge-watching Dance Moms if I’m honest.

Vaseline, a blanket and a Pepperami.
