Expanding her musical preferences into pop and hip-hop, she was inspired by the likes of Gwen Stefani, Janet Jackson, Mary J Blige, Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse. Defying her parents’ suggestions to focus solely on academia, Essosa poured her energy into music and dance throughout school and university, using the recording facilities at local youth centers to lay down demos. It was while recording at college that she met the producer Ryan Price, who invited her to lend her supple vocals to his 2020 single ‘When Said and Done’ and to collaborate in sessions with The Strokes’ producer Gordon Raphael, inspiring her to seek out a producer of her own who could best interpret her nostalgic yet unique sound.
