Nigerian-born, London-raised artist Azekel returns with his highly anticipated new single ‘Smooth’ set to release on September 19th.

Known for his innovative fusion of genres and his deep-rooted connection to both his Nigerian heritage and the eclectic sounds of East London, Azekel continues to push boundaries and redefine contemporary music.

Set against the backdrop of Azekel’s rich musical heritage and modern influences, 'Smooth’ is poised to be a genre-defying track that blends soulful melodies with a contemporary edge. Fans can expect a masterful fusion of sound that speaks to both the heart and the soul, showcasing Azekel’s continued evolution as an artist.

Azekel says “ ‘Smooth’ began its life in Ghana with a sound inspired by nights in Accra. With ‘Smooth’ and my upcoming EP “Sonic Incense” I’m continuing the journey I started on my last EP and exploring human relationships further. This time though, I’m looking at the sensual, intimate and passionate side of love.  Men often don’t talk about sensuality and intimacy but I’m hoping “Smooth” can help to open up that conversation”.

Azekel, whose name means ‘Praise The Lord’ was born in Abuja, Nigeria, before moving to London at the age of five. Growing up as the eldest of four boys in East London, Azekel was steeped in the rich traditions of his Nigerian heritage, with Yoruba culture and music, including legends like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade, shaping his early life. This deep connection to his roots is ever-present in his music, blending seamlessly with the diverse influences he absorbed in London’s vibrant cultural melting pot.

From electronic beats and rock riffs to hip-hop and grime, Azekel’s sound is a unique tapestry woven from the many threads of his experiences. His love for soul and R&B, combined with his fascination for Nigerian funk and psychedelic rock, led him to developing his distinctive style.

Azekel’s talent quickly caught the attention of industry icons, with Prince and Nile Rodgers among his early supporters. His unique vocal delivery and genre-defying approach earned him collaborations with renowned artists such as Gorillaz, solidifying his place as one of the most exciting voices in the industry today.

Following the success of his critically acclaimed album "Analyze Love," which delved into themes of love, community, and identity during the COVID-19 lockdown, Azekel’s "Smooth" promises to be another powerful chapter in his evolving story. "Analyze Love" featured contributions from a stellar lineup of artists, including Ebo Taylor, Made Kuti, Kojey Radical, and more, under the executive production of Grammy winner Om’mas Keith.

Azekel’s live performances have captivated audiences worldwide, with standout shows at iconic venues such as the Southbank Centre, The Barbican, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, as well as international stages like ART X LAGOS and the Cannes Film Festival. His ongoing collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent has further cemented his status as a cultural icon, with performances at YSL’s Rive Droite Live Sessions and the exclusive vinyl release of "Analyze Love" through YSL’s Paris and LA stores.

With over 30 million streams on Spotify and Apple Music, Azekel’s influence continues to grow, and "Smooth" is set to be another milestone in his remarkable journey.
