PREMIERE: Sour Houdini - Candyfloss & Heartbreak (EP) + 10 Questions

Sour Houdini drops his first body of work “Candyfloss & Heartbreak” this Friday 13th September 2024.

UK rap fans worldwide, get ready for the debut project of the versatile, witty lyricist Sour Houdini as he embarks on the journey to releasing his first body of work. Although he’s been gracing us with music for a couple of years now – he’s more notably known for his freestyle series on his Instagram, in which he boasts skilful wordplay and an ability to slide across differing styles of beats. This project encompasses all the above with a strong theme throughout which he cannot wait to show to the masses.

Following on from the success of his single “CreditCandyfloss & Heartbreak marks a new chapter for Houdini, both sonically and thematically. Houdini collaborated with top producers including Primo and Lucwhatscooking to create a fresh, experimental sound that blends Hip-Hop, soul, and jazz influences.

“This album is about transformation and reflection – not just in music, but in life. I wanted to create something that reflects my growth as a person and an artist. I said to myself when I was making the music, I’d only release it once I felt I was ready – now that time has come” says Houdini.

Standout tracks include “Eventually” which tells the story of Houdini’s journey post a tough breakup, “Ode To Houdini” featuring talented vocalist Jess Wolohan and “New Flo” a carefree anthem which symbolises a coming-of-age moment for the young artist.

Sour Houdini sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Probably sounds cliché, but I’ve always loved music. I guess you could say i came from a family of music lovers – my mum used to sing in church and my dad was a huge motown fan. That’s mainly what sparked my interest in music, Michael Jackson, James Brown. The older I got the more I delved into hip hop and the 80s scene – that’s what really ignited my love for music.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

A couple names being: Isaiah Rashad, Future, Gunna, Kendrick Lamar. But on the side of the river id definitely say: Skepta, Dizzee, M Huncho, Potter and Headie. I’d love the opportunity to work with Sam Wise for sure – been locked into house of pharaohs for years now.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

Candyfloss & Heartbreak is a 6 song e.p that has really been in the works for almost 3 years. It doesn’t mean I was working on it specifically the whole time – it really kicked into gear in the last year or so. Plainly speaking – it’s a project that is very personal to me. It ties in a lot of emotions and feelings that I 100% struggle to voice in day to day life. I’d describe it as a journey through the stages of grief, everything is structured with that purpose in mind. I wont say too much as I’d like the listener to dissect this themselves, and hopefully resonate with parts too.

4. How would you describe your sound?

To be honest, I really believe my sound is unique. Of course, I’m biased and everyone says this – but I truly believe it. I think my cadence, rhyme pattern and ability to rap over an array of instrumentals shows my versatility as an artist. I wouldn’t put myself in a box – nothing wrong with it, but I enjoy making music I can enjoy in different moods.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Definitely the making of this E.P – finding the time and putting together what I believe is a very strong tape. Without management, a collective or anything. Just my vision and with the backing of my best mate Ak and my younger bro Ag!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Just be yourself man. Countless times I’ve seen people blow off a persona I know point blank isn’t them. It’s unbecoming. Its not how I want to be portrayed – no one can tell me I’m fake. Be who you really are and if the music hits, people will take notice.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Just a couple off the top of my head from Harlow – Ceesho and Nash. Crazy talented artists who I have no doubt will succeed with their craft because they get it.

Jess Wolohan as well who I’ve collaborated with on this tape and in the past – her vocals speak for itself. Insanely talented artist!

Not really an artist but producer wise – keep an eye out for my boy Primo – he produced LGMH on Candyfloss & Heartbreak and my single Credit. Honestly, my favourite producer without a doubt.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Anyone that knows me, will tell you i’m a huge Gunna fan: one of wun, gift and a curse and drip or drown 2.

Headie: The last one.

Isaiah Rashad: the suns tirade.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I love watching sports – big on Football, MMA, Basketball and Tennis.

I’d say I love watching United but it’s a slightly one sided love affair at the moment.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Vaseline, Shades and a Magnum.
