Khemet McConville - Your Mother Said (Single)

Khemet’s career has seen him work alongside Rap/Hip-Hop artist Trippie Redd, score TV/Radio/Social Media spots for Boot Barn and Wrangler Jeans, and do production work for clients like Hallmark Channel. Throughout the years Khemet has always stayed true to himself and his goal of actualising his unique musical vision.

Songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Khemet McConville has announced the release of his new single ‘Your Mother Said’, laying down soul-capturing grooves and thoughtful sentiment. ‘Your Mother Said’ builds on the aethereal choral and organ embellished shine of Gospel, with a drum groove akin to artists like James Brown or the Dap Kings and a jazz-tinged chord progression as the foundation of the track. Led with emotion and reflection, it evokes the joy of making music and inspires a sense of coming together. Khemet puts his talents on show with his raw vocal character and acumen for unique songwriting styles. Finished off with saxophone melodies that sit atop the tracks atypical harmonic structure, this song truly is a unique finished article.

About his new single the artists says: “The Track is a nursery rhyme-esque sing-along, with strong gospel overtones. Driven by a punchy yet smooth bass line, and accompanied by Motown-inspired drums, the track gradually crescendos until ultimately dropping you into the final verse where a sobering life lesson awaits you. I wanted to create a children’s song that would appeal to adults sonically and be simple enough for kids to sing along to lyrically. Keeping a simple repetitive hook, I deliver a detailed timeline of the character’s life and a number of life lessons to go along with it.”

Born in Pasadena, California, Khemet’s ear for music began as early as kindergarten, the artist teaching himself piano, followed by drums, bass and singing a few years later. Learning audio workstations GarageBand and Logic in an after-school program, he began cutting his teeth in production, recording a ten-song demo featuring live instruments and vocals in just twelve hours at a local Los Angeles studio.

Described as soulful, unique, idiosyncratic and eclectic, Khemet became known for his ineffable compositions. His next project was a debut album, a twelve-track, released on Bandcamp, that utilised his abilities across writing, composition, arranging, performing and engineering. To promote this project Khemet produced a series of live in-studio performances titled ‘Khemet McConville Live at EastWest Studios’ — one of the first of their kind, shot in a wide-angle cinematic format. Self-funded he would produce, edit, and co-mix the entire project himself.

Ultimately, these releases led to signing with SONY Music subsidiary and Independent Artist/Label launchpad AWAL Music.
