S.Lokez sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So, tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I would say that my love of music definitely came from my parents. I grew up in a very musical household; my dad played the drums and my mum sang in a church choir, so there was music everywhere around me when I was younger. As I grew up, I developed my own taste.
2. Tell me a bit about yourself - who is the man behind the music?
I pride myself in being a stand up guy who uses my music and platform to deliver my truth, my personal story, and to talk about the things I've seen around me in my community. I am a representation of the struggle; I want to help improve my community in any way I can, and show people that no matter what, you can make something out of nothing. I put all of that energy into my work - that's just me.
3. Tell me about your new track 'Allegedly Pt 2', what was the inspiration behind it?
The track talks about my experiences with different women that I have had over the years. I just took pieces of their personalities, and different situations I have been through with each of them, and put it together in a track. Once I'd pulled it all together, it sounded good and showed the dramatic narrative that I wanted, so I was keen to put it out there.
4. What other projects do you have coming up? Can you give us some info on them?
I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my upcoming mixtape 'Struggle to Victory 2', and it will be dropping in the very near future. I feel like it's my most versatile piece of work so far - there is really something for everyone in there, whether you're from the hood, a female listener, or someone who just likes the vibe. I can't wait to share it with everyone, keep an eye on my social media pages, particularly my IG: @s.lokezofficial for the drop.
5. How do you record your tracks from behind bars?
In a lot of jails there are music classes, and most of them have studio equipment. Over the years I have bettered my craft, and made a lot of music in those types of classes.
6. We've heard that you direct all your music videos too - how does that work, and what is your creative process?
I usually picture the video as I'm writing the song. I'm really lucky to have a great team around me, so when I give them my vision of what I see and how it should come together when I listen back to the music, they are able to assist me in bringing it to reality. I have the final say on everything, there are a lot of phone calls back and forth, and I give very detailed descriptions to my team on how I want everything. Just know that it is twice as hard to do what I do when you're in my predicament.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Yes there are a few for sure. My guy Kwesi Mack, he's loading and has got a lot of unreleased stuff which I've heard and it's fire. I've been listening to SL-Kutta, he's one of the coldest on the come up right now. Also, check out Diligent Dotty, he's one of my close ones.
8. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
Most of the artists who influenced me early on are from the West Coast, artists like The Jacka and Mozzy, as well as people like AR-AB from Philly. If I'm being honest, when it comes to UK artists, I would have to say Giggs and Young Spray - that's who I was bumping as a teen.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I like to stay healthy so I train and hit the gym regularly, and I'm also an entrepreneur in other areas aside from music. I've got my fingers in a few different pies.
10. Name three things you can't live without when in the studio?
The first thing I can't live without is a good instrumental. The beat needs to talk to me. I can't force it, or I won't get the best out of myself.
Secondly, I need an engineer who knows what he is doing, and can bring the best out of me. These two go hand in hand, definitely.
The third thing I need is a good mindset. I need to be in the right mood for the type of song I plan to make; I have to be in the mind frame of what I'm spitting about.
