LEGACY Takeover: Birmingham Symphony Hall (12.04.25)
On Saturday 12th April 2025 at 7:30pm, LEGACY will be taking over Birmingham’s Symphony Hall to honour the city’s acclaimed Grime scene. Posing as the biggest collaboration between Grime and Orchestral music, hit-makers Jaykae and Lady Leshurr are set to headline the show in-front of 2,300 people. Showcasing the legacy of Birmingham’s Grime scene over the last 40 years, two worlds will collide with the aim to highlight the pioneers who’ve paved the way for aspiring artists across the UK.
Brought together by CBSO [City of Birmingham Orchestra] and Punch Records, the likes of Big Dog Yogo, C4, Safone, T.Roadz, Sox, Dapz On The Map and more will perform live alongside a 60-piece orchestra with multi-award winning conductor, Phil Meadows.
Leading the way for generations to come, Grime has played a significant role in the development of Black British music over several decades. Building on the success of docu-series '0121 Legacy', which launched on LinkUp TV, and amassed over 600,000 views across multiple-platforms after premiering in both London and Birmingham - LEGACY’s impact on Birmingham’s creative community speaks for itself.
Jaykae, a globally-known star who’s collaborated with Stormzy, Skepta, Mike Skinner and Jorja Smith to name a few, alongside performances at the UK’s reputable Glastonbury Festival, Wireless and Creamfields, has played a significant role in putting the city’s music scene on the map. Lady Leshurr, who’s won several MOBO Awards for her phenomenal talent, has provided a safe space for aspiring female artists in a male-dominated field. Paving a lane of her own, the “Queen of Birmingham” amassed millions of views with her ‘Queen’s Speech’ series.
Jaykae, UK hit-maker and LEGACY headliner commented, “When I'm done, I’m gonna get seen with the likes of Mike Skinner and UB40. I'm good with what I'm doing. I know I'll go down in history in this city.”
Originating from a reputable book, documentary and miniseries that explores the untold stories of Birmingham’s Grime, Rap and Hip-Hop scenes, LEGACY has created a close-knit community of stellar artists, tastemakers and entrepreneurs whose authenticity and resilience has enabled the fruition of such a monumental event.
Nikki Riggon, Head of Programme & Senior Producer at Punch Records stated, “We are incredibly honoured to celebrate Birmingham's rich Rap and Grime heritage in such an extraordinary way. LEGACY began as a documentary commissioned by Punch Records to highlight the rise of Birmingham's rap industry and its profound impact on British music. Now, by transforming it into a live performance in collaboration with the CBSO, we’re breaking creative boundaries—showcasing the Midlands' finest talent to new audiences while honouring the pioneers of the scene and shining a light on its vibrant future.”
Tom Spurgin, Creative Director at CBSO commented, “Our musicians are exceptional at what they do and we have a great history of collaborating with artists from other genres. Our new partnership with Punch Records showcases the best of Birmingham live on stage from the worlds of classical and grime, and shares audiences between our two genres to appreciate the immense artistry in each genre.”
