Revered artist Greentea Peng returns with a mesmerizing new single, “STONES THROW,” the latest offering from her forthcoming 14-track album, “TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY” out 21st March via AWAL.
“STONES THROW” is an evocative exploration of vulnerability, resilience, and transformation. This poignant lament showcases Peng’s unique ability to channel personal pain into transcendent art. Produced by long-time collaborator Earbuds, the track delves into the unraveling of a relationship, its bittersweet tones weaving a narrative poised between strength and surrender, defiance and resignation.
The new single is accompanied by a music video directed by long standing collaborator ABOVEGROUND. Shot in Latvia, the visuals flicker between emotive close-up shots and wide angle cinematic frames. The use of fish-eye lenses and long-distance zooms match the frenetic rattle of breakbeats through the track’s runtime.
'As soon as I heard the song I had a feeling that we’d be taking the video production close to home in Eastern Europe. I felt a sense of nostalgia and after a deep conversation with Aria about what the song means to her and the world we see it in everything just ticked the boxes. We shot for two days, starting early, all on film in the cold Latvian rain. Shashlik for lunch, wine for dinner and an intense shot list throughout the day. Out of all the videos we’ve done together, I think this one stands out to me the most. She was completely locked into her character. it was deeper than music.' - ABOVEGROUND
The upcoming album marks a significant evolution in Greentea Peng’s creative journey. While her debut album, 2021’s ‘MAN MADE’, turned its gaze outward, capturing the collective spirit of a charged moment in time, “TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY” shifts inward, offering a deeply personal exploration of selfhood. Themes of identity, growth, and raw humanity are at the heart of this expansive project, anchoring its songs in the politics of self-reflection.
First single “TARDIS (hardest)” was a perfect introduction to this new era - a fearless, low-swung manifesto, showcasing Peng’s unmistakable word-craft over production which is at once tower-block streetwise and mystical. “TARDIS (hardest) was followed up with single “One Foot”, the chorus of which is a standout example of the stop-in-your-tracks vocals which punctuate Peng’s spoken-truths throughout the album. Produced by OCT8VES (Jon Mills and Nat Powers), the raw and hypnotic instrumentation is perfectly complemented by Greentea’s dynamic vocal delivery.
Given the personal growth of the past 3 years, it comes as no surprise that the creative process of “TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY” was more expressive and hands-on than ever before, with Peng playing bass on multiple tracks and delving more deeply into the production side of the craft. More broadly the album’s producer roll gives an insight into the levels of talent and diversity behind the veil of the record. Longtime collaborator, London-based hitmaker Earbuds features heavily, alongside versatile talent Samo - creative and kindred spirits. Following on from their work on Peng’s 2022 mixtape GREENZONE 108, multi-platinum producer Nat Powers and the legendary, enigmatic producer St.Francis Hotel also return to put their stamp on the album.
