Jus Jemaine sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
It all began in the playground, rapping with friends. At first, I was spitting lyrics that weren’t really mine—they were my brother’s. He was older and into music, and I looked up to him. I’d hear him recording late at night while I was trying to sleep, and that stuck with me.
Music was always around me. My dad was a huge reggae fan, and the sounds, the beats—they pulled me in. That’s when I became a real fan of music, not just of words, but of rhythm, feeling, and expression.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
My biggest influence is Drake. He’s the reason I rap the way I do today. The way he puts his lyrics together, crafts hooks, and balances being both fun and serious makes him a dominant force in the game. Without him, I wouldn’t be here musically.
As for artists I’d love to work with—Potter Payper, Drake, Skepta, and Future are at the top of my list. Each of them brings something unique to the table, and collaborating with them would be a dream.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
After Best for Me drops, I’ll be releasing an R&B tape with Modxste, someone I grew up with. We’ve been working on this project for two years, and I can honestly say it’s a game changer. The tape brings a perfect mix of hooks and lyrics, blending our styles in a way that feels fresh and real. I’m excited for everyone to hear it.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe my sound as a blend of rap and R&B in a way that doesn’t fit into just one category. It’s something different—something I’d call *the new wave*. I’m bringing a fresh energy to the music game, pushing boundaries and creating my own lane.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
One of my proudest moments as an artist was being given a show by Mixtape Madness called Give Me A Word because of my freestyling. It was a big moment that showed my talent was being recognized. Another huge achievement was hitting 500K on my Instagram freestyle Game Over—that really put my name out there and proved that people were paying attention to what I do.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Stay strong, stay consistent, and believe in what you’re doing. People will always have something to say—I’ve had many downplay what I do, calling me “just a freestyler.” But every day, I prove a point and show the world that I can do this. If you stay focused and put in the work, so can you.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Definitely check out Modxste—one of the best singers in London, in my opinion. Also, soul singer RayRayVela and MonroeX. These three artists have something special, and I truly believe they can change the game.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Right now, these albums are on heavy rotation for me:
Nothing Was the Same – Drake
Ambition – Wale
TrapSoul – Bryson Tiller
Each of these albums has had a big influence on me, whether it’s the storytelling, the emotion, or the way they blend rap and R&B. They never get old.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
When I’m not making music, I’m either chilling with friends, listening to new sounds, or finding ways to stay inspired. I like to take in different experiences—whether it’s watching movies, traveling, or just having deep conversations. Everything in life can fuel creativity, so I try to stay open to it all.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
My Phone – I write a lot of my lyrics on it and use it to reference ideas.
Water – Gotta stay hydrated, especially when recording for hours.
Good Vibes – Whether it’s the right people or the right energy, the studio has to feel creative and comfortable.
