Kinwu & Koan the alias’s - SUMAK (Official Video)

A go-getter’s anthem with a side of surrealism, SUMAK marks the first single from Kinwu and Koan the alias’s forthcoming EP, set to drop via Tice Cin’s Neoprene Genie label on 19 March. A hypnotic blend of ambient breakbeat and off-kilter lyricism, SUMAK (out now) is movement in motion. In this ever-shifting sonic terrain, Kinwu’s atmospheric production meets Koan’s hyper-vivid storytelling.

"It’s narrative in a David Foster Wallace hysterical realism kind of way," Koan explains. "If my mind was a map, every few lines are like pressing on a random place and scrolling through images of that place before skipping to the next, but the whole map is still my mind. Stasis is not the same as stillness; this is a go-getter’s anthem. There's a parallel narrative which warns of the consequences of taking it all too serious. Satire is only ever an exaggeration of the truth. Sumak is the substitute for when life doesn't throw you lemons.”

On the track, self-described as “ambient breakbeat”, Kinwu adds, “I tried to reach towards a different feeling on this song, while Koan flexed his lyricism over the beat, it was my intention to let the beat be a soundbed, somewhere in its own ecosystem.”

The single drops with a captivating visual shot by interdisciplinary artist Pyro. Part of the creative house one duo in fourt, he has worked on campaigns for the likes of depop, Converse and more. As an actor, he has starred in music videos and films for the likes of James Blake and Mount Kimbie.
