A bit about us…

A little over 20 years ago a group of friends formed an underground graffiti publication. Over time submissions and support grew, and the skeleton of the magazine we now know as Wordplay fell naturally into place.

Rooted in the culture of its readers and driven by the efforts of hip hop and graffiti enthusiasts from around the UK and beyond, Wordplay’s coverage has increased to include all facets of hip-hop culture, fashion and lifestyle across the globe.

By forming strong allegiances with record/clothing labels and increasing the fan base, as well as more recent work alongside worldwide phenomenas such as Anderson .Paak, Action Bronson and Run The Jewels, the brand has developed organically into one recognised for pioneering hip-hop and graffiti lifestyles whilst paying homage to the artists that defined them.

Our printed magazine is unique in a world of digital media and something we are proud to have. It offers a direct route to customers and handling distribution ourselves allows us to selectively place the magazine in the shops, outlets and communities it’s immediately tailored towards.

Wordplay Magazine serves as the perfect place for a brand wishing to be built on authenticity whilst keeping its finger on the pulse of the movement.


Distribution

Our physical copies are stocked at various key locations nationwide to ensure we reach those most passionate about the culture. Our model allows us to reach out and engage new audiences at live music events, festivals, streetwear stores and recording studios. Exposure for our advertisers is total, all of our copies are read, none sit on shelves, none are returned and critically none are pulped.

We target our stockists based on our content. This includes spray paint and streetwear stores, music venues, recording studios, universities and festivals.

Profile

Our readers are creative consumers with expressive tendencies. Immersing themselves in a culture that necessitates a reflection of what they see from the information sources that they remain loyal to. A difficult market to target, but dedicated in their pursuits. They readily engage and participate and actively share positive experience of products. They are always information hungry. A balance of ABC1 and C2DE readers.

Readership

We aim to create a magazine that isn’t disposable. From the depth of our interviews to the quality of our photography. We found most magazines remain as booklets on coffee tables. Alternatively, articles being blu-tacked to the walls of our younger audience. In a sense, it’s an embodiment of the things we saw growing up and what we as fans want to see in the magazine. This way we find it easy to align the content with our audience.


Sponsorship

We are able to work with brands to offer bespoke sponsorship packages. We believe this provides an increased level of interaction and awareness between the brand and reader.

Elements could include the following:

• A full page credit at the start of the magazine.

• Advertorial content in the magazine.

• A Sponsored Instagram take over.

• A banner on our website.

We offer independent brands and household names the opportunity to be featured in our style pages and promote their seasonal range. Recently, we’ve worked with the likes of Size?, Puma, New Balance, Dephect, FattyLou amongst many others. We tailor our art direction around each issue of the magazine and collections/seasons of clothing brands we work with; all professionally shot and edited by Wordplay team photographers. For brands who choose to work with us as part of the curated shoots we offer discounted further marketing opportunities both in print and digital alongside.

Our Readers

Our audience includes: enthusiasts, students, music artists and professional, successful recording artists around the world. From the submissions we receive we know our most engaged readers are those just starting out. They might be graduates looking for exposure or individuals that are completely new to the medium hoping to make a career in music. Many of our readers idolise the artists we cover and are highly influenced by what they wear, how they act and their actions. Hip hop culture has a very conscious and supportive following helping with various youth projects in communities around the world.

Their enthusiasm is infectious and drives us forward.
