Pinty - Tomorrow's Where I'm At (EP)

First single ‘Comfort Me’ is sonic quicksilver: a hypnotic club beat guided by the fluidity of Emma-Jean Thackray’s searing trumpet playing, it was hand-picked by Annie Mac as her track of the week at BBC Radio 1.

Its successor, ‘Found It’, a love story set at his local pub The Gowlett, is a bubbling hybrid of nocturnal house grooves and hip-hop sensibility. Pinty’s memories of the pub trace back to being a kid sharing a pizza while his dad nursed an ale after his Royal Mail shift. But years later, a new South London clientele finds him “arm to arm with Bukowski types”.

Indeed, gentrified London provides the backdrop to many of his stories here. ‘Tomorrow’s Where I’m At’ is weighted equally in confession as it is observation, and, balancing themes of grief and loss with the backdrop of London’s effervescent pulse, ‘Another Lost Soul’ might just be his hardest hitting tale yet. Pondering the demise of the life of a homeless woman ignored by gentrifiers in the street, Pinty draws on characters from The Wire and The Sopranos born into the wrong life while giving a nod to Wings Of Desire in the video.
