PREMIERE: Steven Bamidele - You Were Wrong (Single + Official Video)
Nigeria-born, Brighton-based artist Steven Bamidele has released ‘You Were Wrong’, the lead single and introductory track from his forthcoming EP, Uncrowded, with an accompanying lyric video (via Park The Van).
The last time we heard from Bamidele in the form of solo material was 2020’s A Sense Of Belonging EP, however it was once entirely possible that we would never see its release. Shortly after his father’s death in 2019, Bamidele began producing music for other people, saying that it helped to “take the pressure off of the ego and the constant self-examination of being a solo songwriter”. During this time, he contemplated quitting working on solo music altogether.
Despite this intense grief, he has continued to work on solo music; the forthcoming Uncrowded EP, and by extension ‘You Were Wrong’, have been the result of a deep channeling of emotions for Bamidele.
‘You Were Wrong’ marks a subtle change in musical direction from Bamidele’s previous EP, 2020’s A Sense Of Belonging. This new single sees him retain his usual neo-soul foundation, while showcasing prominent influences from hip-hop and funk. This particular combination of sounds was largely absent from the previous EP. The track is surprisingly upbeat given the context of its creation, at least from a musical standpoint. Lyrically, Bamidele seemingly alternates between a triumphant tone (“Look how far I’ve come, you were wrong to leave me alone”) and a somber one (“Had my head screwed on backwards, looking for a way out”).
