Jenevieve wows with new album “Division” out today.

With an assertive yet coy approach, emerging songstress Jeneiveve delivers the right vibes on her latest single, “Résumé.” Produced by Benziboy, the singer makes a failed situationship almost sound pleasurable as she pivots through the heartbreak in a charming fashion. Through every clever bar and 80’s pop synths, new lessons are learned, including that her love with Mr. Redacted was wilted without the rose-colored glasses.

With a fitting video, Jenevive lights her sage to release the energy of lover’s past while perusing around town looking stylish as ever. Known for her creative music videos, the devil is in the details with “Résumé” as colours of peace like blue and green open the video with red and yellow palettes following soon after to reflect the mood of warmth, encouragement, and happiness. If moving on was a mood, the singer captures it in less than four minutes with a fish-eye lens.

Jeneiveve sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So, tell me Jenevieve, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

For me, my love for music began in the dance studio at a very young age. Discovering music through dance was the start of learning rhythm and movement coming together as one, and from there, it sparked my passion and curiosity to discover new sounds. I began to search for different sounds, from classical to salsa to pop to funk and anything I could get my hands on.

2. Who are some artists that influenced you, and that you’d want to work with in the future?

Most of the artists that influenced me are, unfortunately, gone now. If I had the opportunity to collaborate with them while they were here, the list would look like: Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Celia Cruz, Freddie Mercury, Barry White, John Lennon, David Bowie and Teena Marie. All these artists heavily influenced me growing up. Artists that are on my wish list today are: Rosalia, Bad Bunny, Missy Elliot, Gwen Stefani, Hall and Oats, Solange, Cameo, Post Malone, Chris Brown, Drake, Andre 3000, Peggy Gou, Stromae, Depeche Mode, and Mariah Carey, if she’ll have me lol.

3. What are some of the problems you faced making and releasing music during the corona virus pandemic?

Thankfully I didn’t have any problems at all! My first two releases “Medallion” and “Baby Powder” were recorded, I’d say, almost a year before the pandemic hit, and the videos for those two songs were also shot just before. Luckily, I had recorded quite a bit of music with Benziboy prior to any of that happening. By the time I released the Baby Powder music video in March 2020 we were just starting with the lockdown, in a way I feel like it helped because people were now at home and away from the busy everyday life and had more time on their hands to really sit and listen to music. As crazy as that sounds, the pandemic actually helped.

4. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is a fusion of Benziboy and Jenevieve combined, I don’t really know how to describe it, but we’re both on the same brain wave, sonically. I like to think our sound is different and not to be placed in any type of box or genre; each of our songs are different and we strive to carve our own lane in sound. I feel so blessed to have found someone who thinks and has the same musical taste as me.

5. What’s been your proudest moment to date as an artist?

My proudest moment was walking down Fairfax, and a convertible car pulled up at the red-light blasting Medallion and filling the block with my song!! Also, walking into random stores or coffee shops and hearing my songs playing, it’s an indescribable feeling, can’t help but to feel proud :)

6. Name three things you can’t live without when in the studio?

Water, a hoodie, and Benziboy.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

One of my favourites is K. Forest, I feel like he’s so under rated, he’s like my little secret.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I still have a lot of albums to catch up on, since I’ve been mostly working on my project, but I just finished listening to Slowthai’s “Tyron”, once it started, I couldn’t stop listening! I really dig him as a rapper.

9. What do you like to do when you’re not making music?

I like reading fashion magazines, I love to dance, go to the park with my pup Mojo, I also enjoy boxing with my personal trainer, thrifting for vintage cameras and just being outdoors.

10. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music? And, what’s on the horizon for you following the release of the incredible “Résumé” earlier this month?

Best advice I’d say to them is, don’t sell out, be true to yourself, and believe in yourself completely. Don’t listen to anything or anyone and follow your instincts. Challenge yourself to produce quality music. Make sure you have a solid team and people who truly uplift and support you. And pretty much, “don’t get lost in the sauce” – Post Malone once told me that, before he became who we all know today, that always stuck with me. Thank you for the compliment on “Résumé” :) On the horizon for me next is the release of my long-awaited Project, “Division”, which is out today, and features 12 tracks. This body of work is one that really means a lot to me and I’m so excited to share it and finally release it into the universe. I hope it blesses everyone’s ears.
