Ashley Henry - Melanin (Single)
The latest release “Melanin” by Vocalist, pianist and producer Ashley Henry marks the second single from his forthcoming 6 track EP “My Voice”, set for release on May 13th.
“My Voice” is the follow up to Henry’s highly acclaimed debut studio album “Beautiful Vinyl Hunter” which was featured as one of BBC 6music’s Albums of the year, as well as garnering high praise from publications like CLASH recognizing the album as “A triumph in every sense”
“Melanin” sees Henry draw influence from the genres of contemporary jazz, hip-hop, R&B and soul, whilst featuring an incredible line-up of the UK’s finest musicians including flautist James Massiah, to create a track that is truly special, with the incredible instrumentation weaving around Henry’s warming vocals, making something you’ll be listening to endlessly.
Speaking more on the track: “Melanin is finding someone or something that’s a refuge from taking that wrong or easy path” explains Henry. “Listening to it feels like a safe space. I wrote it as a certainty of belonging that’s accessible no matter where we are. Melanin is my celebration of beauty, love and black futurity. The track pays homage to women always trying to provide a safe space for their families and through their culture, and to the safe spaces I've found in my life".
Henry’s talents have seen him to supporting live shows for the likes of Loyle Carner and Christine & the Queens, as well as playing alongside some of the most incredibly talented and innovative jazz and R&B artists including Nao, Celeste, Esperanza Spalding, Shabaka Hutchings and Gregory Porter.
