Miranda Joan - Overstimulated (Album)

Overstimulated’ is the highly anticipated new album from Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and musician Miranda Joan. Co-produced by multi-instrumentalist, and bass extraordinaire CARRTOONS, the release features offerings from Sly5thAve, Hailey Niswanger, Jake Sherman, Kristine Kruta aka Lil Kruta (The Eagles), Clairo keys player Danae Greenfield and Grammy-winning bassist Ben Williams.

Singles from the album have received previous support from the likes of NPR, Nemone (BBC 6Music), Deb Grant & Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music), CassKidd (BBC 1Xtra), Francesca Harding (KCRW), Wonderland, Tony Minvielle (Jazz FM), BBC Focus Beats, Boba Fatt (Soho Radio), John Kennedy (Radio X), Consequence, EARMILK, Exclaim!, Stereofox and CBC, as well as playlisting on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds R&B.

Simultaneously leaning into and letting go of the excessive and overstimulating, the ‘Overstimulated’ LP sees Miranda’s developed songwriting and storytelling shift into a space of contemporary Jazz and Soul. An accumulation of years of growth and development, both personally and professionally, the album was created closely alongside CARRTOONS over several months.

“The two-hour bike ride and hour and a half I’d spend on the train each way to Ben’s studio, I’d listen to what we did and often come up with ideas. It just flowed, this entire project. Ben (CARRTOONS) has been a true co-pilot on this journey and I’m so grateful the universe opened up in this way.”

Focus track “Zero Gravity feat. Sly5thAve” floats away into the entire galaxy that opened up during these creative years for Miranda Joan. Epitomising the breadth of possibility ‘Overstimulated’ invites the listener into, the track features composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Sly5thAve alongside Tim “Smithsoneon” Smith (drums) and Randy Runyon (guitar). Sitting between previous singles “Overstimulated” and “Coffee/Too Much”, it is a moment awash with calm and mindfulness.

Alongside the playfulness of “Bada Bing! feat. CARRTOONS” and “Kiss A Stranger”, the LP sees Miranda Joan taking stock of those she has loved, lost and felt held by in the tumultuous years since starting the journey to creating ‘Overstimulated’. “It’s an album book-ended by songs of affirmation, of rooting, of returning to and loving oneself, intertwined with the messy, chaotic and interconnected web of my hopes, dreams, imagination, love, and heartache,” she adds.
