Murkage Dave - The City Needs... Part Deux (Album)
East Londoner Murkage Dave releases 'The City Needs... Part Deux', the sequel to his acclaimed 2022 album 'The City Needs A Hero'.
Throughout the eleven songs, the singer-songwriter expands on the themes that formed the core of the album's parent record: identity, escapism, self-belief & friendship, bookending his 'The City Needs A Hero' era. Dave worked with a diverse list of producers across the project: Canada's Juno Award-winning Ryan Hemsworth, UK Funky titan Roska, Mancunian wonderkid whYJay (Pa Salieu), Leicester's Massappeals (Charli XCX), and Astral Black label boss Jon Phonics. To celebrate 'The City Needs... Part Deux', Dave has announced 'One Night In Hackney: Murkage Dave Unplugged', a one-off acoustic show, on the 14th of November at Oslo Hackney.
Dave recently shared 'Violence In Me' featuring Jaykae, where he wrestles with his complicated relationship with religion and 'Never Sing Olly Olly Olly Again' which saw him celebrate a breakthrough in self-confidence. Other features across the project come from Teef - who features on The Street's new album and in Mike Skinner's new film - on lead track 'Real Life Thriller', which was inspired by numerous conspiracy theories & unsolved murders. When speaking on the single, Dave explains, "I was inspired by murders that were covered up, deaths there are conspiracy theories about and murders that people have historically gotten away with. When super sinister things happen in plain sight." Up next, cherished rapper Lioness has a lot of fun on 'Power Corrupts' over a lounge sample and boom bap drums, which sees her and Dave get braggadocious with glints of a deeper, darker undertone. Switching between the self-destruction of 'The Empire Strikes Back’ to the self-improvement of 'Choose Your Own Adventure', Daves's unique view on life takes us on a series of twists and turns. The musician mediates on poignant, personal and playful moments that perfectly capture this era of his artistry.
