New York rapper Cakes da Killa presents his new single “Cakewalk,” out now via Young Art Records. Following this year’s standalone single, “Sex Drive,” “a slinky bedroom-worthy Baltimore club track” (Interview), and his revered 2022 full-length Svengali — which garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, PAPER, The FADER, Pitchfork, XXL, Wire, and more — “Cakewalk” sees Cakes reuniting with long-time collaborator Sam Katz on the club-ready track packed with explosive, bass-heavy hip-house beats underlying his signature breathless flows. “Cakewalk” moves like a new mission statement, featuring the rapper tearing through a mutated house shuffle with the hook “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

“‘Cakewalk’ is a warning to an intimate partner that’s playing in your face,” says Cakes. “Drawing inspiration from classics like Kelis’Caught Out There’ and Blu Cantrell’sHit ‘Em Up Style’ because who doesn’t love a record that spells out exactly how you’re feeling when a relationship starts getting rocky.”

A few words to describe Cakes da Killa: polymath, businessman, trailblazer, innovator. New Jersey-born, but he’s reigned in New York throughout a decade-plus independent career, tearing up stages and dancefloors worldwide with a trendsetting blend of rap, house, jazz, dance, and anything that piques his interest. He’s persevered through blogs, SoundCloud, a global pandemic, and an ever-shifting music landscape prioritizing everything but talent and taste. Nevertheless, Cakes’ critical and communal acclaim precede him: he’s played Glastonbury and Whole Festival, and he’s worked with everyone from Honey Dijon to Injury Reserve. Whether holding court, going through customs, or crushing competition, Cakes stands firm as a seasoned vet who knows his role and knows the game.
