Caspar Grant - Capricornucopia (Album)

Birmingham-born rapper Caspar Grant issues his debut album Capricornucopia. With the title “referencing the cold month he was born in and the colourful landscape that furnishes his psyche”, Grant opens up his mind for his listeners, revealing an array of emotions as conveyed within the album.

Last Waltz is A dark beginning to the album which has all but one sentence. An intense start to the album accentuates and anticipates what you are yet to listen to. This astral beginning tunes in with Caspar Grants intent of making, his music sound psychedelic and hallucinatory.

He then moves on to a song incorporating cymbals, an assortment of pitched percussion instruments, with elements of strings to tie the two contrasting melodies that can be heard in Distant.

Breath Control Pt.1, featuring Zaeb Dust picks up the pace of the album momentarily, with the combination of electric synthesizers, Caspar’s fast flowing bars, and Dust’s harmonic vocals to create a melting pot of groove and vibes.

The contrasting Breath Control Pt.2 slows down almost instantly, the dichotomous parts reflecting the motion of breathing in (Part 1) and breathing out (Part 2). The speeding tempo towards the end of Pt.2 conveys the cyclical nature of breathing in and out, further portraying the relationship of the two songs.

A jazzy, Fire from Ice follows, four songs later, with a story telling set of bars that has you leaning in for more. The bass, sax and continuous harmonic sporadic cadences allows for the contrasting title to form as an image whilst listening to the five-minute song.

The hypnotic Delalilalala amalgamates a humorous but still yet narrative rap from Caspar and a 70’s Beatles, The Pretty Things, Jimi Hendrix style chorus placed as the antepenultimate track on the 14-songed album.

Capricornacopia finalises the album, as reflected in the album title. The base and violins like that of a nostalgic 2014 Clean Bandit melody contradicts the intense and rough flow of Grant. With this simply being the beginning for Caspar Grant in terms album drops, his satiric and ludicrously amusing nature has set a high standard for the rest of this rapper’s drops.
