PREMIER: Kate Odulukwe - Live and Let Me Live (Single)

New Yorker Kate Odulukwe releases Afropop banger, celebrating life and her Igbo background.

Live and Let Me Live marks a significant step in the musical journey of Nigerian-American singer songwriter and actress Kate, typically known for combining her love of traditional Nigerian music with R&B and Pop influences. This new release cultivates a new and refined sound, as Kate smoothly fuses Pop music with Afrobeat music.

Influenced by artists such as Yemi Alade, Flavour and Tiwa Savage, along with newer names like Tems, CKay and Nnonso Amadi, Live and Let Me Live is an exciting contribution to the ever-growing Afropop genre. A particular nod is given to Flavour in particular, for his ability to put Igbo music, dance and attire on center stage with all his projects.

It’s a joyful track. The Igbo phrase “Biri ka mbiri,” consistently repeated throughout the song, translates as “live and let me live.” It’s an acceptance and acknowledgement that the world is big enough for all, and during our limited period on earth, it is better to spend time enjoying all life has to offer, rather than worrying about struggle and strife.

“I want this song to evoke a feeling of joy and escapism. One of the most powerful things about music is its ability to touch us emotionally. I'm so proud of what I've been able to do with this song, and I genuinely hope that it touches every listener.”

Not a stranger to making captivating music, Kate’s debut EP, Melanin and Melancholy was described as “transcendent” by PopDust Magazine, and was given a stamp of approval by radio legend and journalist Sway Calloway, paving the way for Live and Let Me Live to make a huge impression. A comparison to an all-time favourite artist, India.Arie, was the icing on the cake of a successful debut release.

Not always a confident person, Kate is quick to attribute her development to the power of music and performance. As a very shy and sensitive child she barely spoke, and when she did it was little more than a whisper. Her first glimpse into the freedom afforded by singing was at age 11, when she joined a choir and learnt to project her voice. With an Ivy League theatrical education behind her, Kate successfully performs in theatre, TV and film, as well as on the musical stage as an artist. She has managed to maintain her roots in Anambra State, Nigeria, and the Bronx, NY, embracing both aspects of her heritage and seamlessly combining them in her music and performance.

Live and Let Me Live was written and co-produced by Kate, in collaboration with a Nigerian producer via Zoom! The recording, mix and master was completed in New York, close to her home, with Kate being adamant that it is important to do this in a comfortable and familiar place, allowing herself to really feel at her most creative.

Live and Let Me Live is available on streaming platforms from tomorrow, but listen exclusively below!
