Beant - The Rules of Engagement (EP)
British-Punjabi artist Beant has dropped his debut EP ‘The Rules of Engagement’, produced by a.s. kullar – here’s why you should listen.
The first single from the charismatic rapper, ‘Wicked Ways’, was released on the 16th of June with slick visuals. The braggadocios lyrics explore his Punjabi heritage, with a nod to Duleep Singh, the last Sikh maharaja. As Beant rides through Birmingham’s broad street, it’s clear he’s influenced by the likes of 2 Pac and the attitude of Hip Hop’s golden era. However, there’s something fresh about his choice delivery and distinct UK flows throughout the project.
This unique style is best displayed on ‘Brown Geezas’, where the hypnotising beat is accompanied with rustic lyrics that could only come out of the UK. Clearly the duo is heavily inspired by film as the backdrop for the music video includes multiple cult classics flashing across Beant’s face as he confidently raps to camera.
A major highlight of the EP are the beats which continue the sound that a.s. kullar has grown to be known by. The drums cut through the production and the beat switches used, keep the body of work engaging and showcase the young producer’s talent for beat-making. They perfectly match the lyrically sharp verses which disarmingly explore themes of social justice and critique the current political elite (particularly on songs like Samson).
