Subculture - Mauve Rain (EP)

London producer/artist Subculture announces EP ‘Mauve Rain (out 22nd September 2023) via Twisted Hearts Records. Drawing inspiration from musical luminaires such as Beck, Tame Impala and Mura Masa, Subculture fearlessly embraces the unconventional, merging Indie sensibilities, Psych-Rock soundscapes, Post-Punk attitude and cutting-edge Electronic. The 6-track EP explores themes of ambition, death, grief and existential purpose while still maintaining a light-hearted edge and asserting itself as the producer/artists’s most personal work to date. Joining forces with some of his favourite alternative artists from his wide base of collaborators (some featuring and some on writer/backing vocal duties) including Grand Pax, Mac Wetha, Chelou, Deema and Connie Constance; the release follows the intro single to the project, ‘HYDRO’ Ft. Chelou which was accompanied by the Harvey Williams-Fairley directed music video depicting a fictitious Subculture planning a heist with his unlikely crew followed by an adrenaline-fueled chase scene (WATCH HERE) and the song also already received it’s first sync on the ITV show ‘Maternal’.

When speaking about the EP, Subculture says: “During the process of making this project I suffered a few things in my personal life namely the loss of my mother earlier this year who I was very close with. Although not my original intention, the project became a diary to my grief and my personal concerns as well as the circularity of life and that feeling of coming through the tunnel at the end when you start to see colour again. There’s a split in feeling when producing for so many other artists while also producing my own music that can sometimes leave me in a confusing place but the catharsis of making this record helped me get through some really dark times. This all happened over a period where I was trying to lean into more guitar-oriented genres of music and also experimenting more broadly with my song-writing.”

Gorillaz-approved producer/artist Subculture continues to bridge the gap between future and old. The front-facing artist and revered music producer has an extensive history of pushing boundaries and crafting genre-bending compositions. On his latest offering, Subculture fearlessly embraces the unconventional, merging Indie sensibilities, Psych-Rock soundscapes, Post-Punk attitude and cutting-edge electronic and Hip Hop elements. The result is an audacious exploration that defies categorization and has brought some of the UK’s hottest artists into his studio to collaborate with him such as Hak Baker, Nao, Mac Wetha, Kojey Radical, Rachel Chinouriri, Joy Crookes, Tiana Major9 and many more.

Subculture has received 2 previous #1 EP positions from Jamz Supernova (1Xtra), he was one of Gorillaz 2021 Hot-tipped Artists as well as one of Notion Magazine’s Artists to Watch. Further support has also come from New York Times, Fader, iD, Line of Best Fit, Okay Africa and Colors as well as recent syncs with BBC (I MAY DESTROY YOU), HBO, Netflix, ITV and one of the latest Google Pixel adverts.

There is a lot more to come later in the year with Hak Baker and Harvey Whyte collaborations penned for release later in Autumn and early 2024 along with a tonne of producer and writer credits for various artists..
