PREMIERE: Maxine Scott - Sinner (Single) + 10 Questions

UK rising star and unstoppable energy, Maxine Scott and ‘Sinner’ – her first independent single release from her upcoming debut EP titled ‘Confessions’, set to be unleashed in late spring. The EP promises to be an exploration of alternative R&B, soul and jazz.

‘Confessions’, serves as an intimate diary, baring the raw and unfiltered narratives of her life. As the EP unfolds, Maxine invites us into her world, creating an immersive experience that resonates with the universal themes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery.

Maxine’s hugely acclaimed debut EP, ‘Erykah U Bad’ nailed a solid 10/10 review in international music mag, ‘Blues and Soul’ and was on heavy rotation as Mi-Soul’sTraffic Jam of the Week’. This was followed by her first jazzy EP with Alf.E, ‘Ya Energy’ which is continuing to get hammered on stations globally. Building on Maxine’s meteoric output, ‘Sinner’ will be getting the same treatment – trust me.

Maxine Scott sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Growing up, I found myself immersed in my dad's collection of Lauryn Hill records, which became the soundtrack to my formative years. The soulful resonance of Hill's music left an indelible mark on my sound, shaping her musical sensibilities from an early age. At just 10 years old, I took a pivotal step into the world of music by joining the church-based music organisation known as Pie Factory. The organisation recognised my  abilities and provided a nurturing environment for me to explore and develop my voice as a young female artist.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

I draw inspiration from iconic voices such as Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, and Billie Holiday. I haven’t really though about future collaborations because I take a lot of influences from people that have passed. Gregory Porter would be a dream collaboration for sure! His voice is like silk.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

Ahh announcement time! As I embark on the next chapter of my musical journey, anticipation reaches a crescendo with the upcoming release of my debut EP, titled "Confessions." Set to be unleashed in late spring 2024, the EP promises to be an exploration of alternative R&B, soul, and jazz, showcasing my versatility as a singer and songwriter.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as soulful and emotive, with a diverse and experimental musical backdrop that draws from R&B, soul and jazz influences. Resulting in a genre-blending sound that sets me apart in the contemporary music landscape.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

My proudest achievement thus far as an artist has been securing a spot on BBC Kent's Fresh Finds for my debut track, 'Erykah U Bad.' This acknowledgment has fuelled my aspirations, and I am optimistic about receiving similar recognition for my upcoming debut EP.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Its like owning your own business. Especially if you’re independent. For aspiring musicians, honing your craft is essential. Become great. And really take the time to get good. Develop a unique identity, connect with fellow artists and industry professionals, and leverage online platforms to showcase your work. Stay informed about trends, create high-quality content, and be PERSISTENT! Success in the music industry requires a combination of talent, hard work, and strategic decision-making, so stay true to your passion and continuously evolve as an artist.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

LOVE my peoples. Check out Strama. She co-wrote and produced the EP with me. Amethyst is an R&B / soul singer and she is killing it atm.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

‘Kind of Blue’ Miles Davis is on rotation.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

When I'm not making music, I prioritise my overall well-being by engaging in activities that nurture my body and mind. Regular exercise and spending time in nature are essential parts of my routine. Additionally, I cherish moments with my family and friends, making sure to dedicate quality time to those relationships. However, even on my days off, I find myself continuously doing something music related. Whether it's planning, strategising, or undertaking tasks related to my musical pursuits.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Water, Pen & Notepad and Camera / Phone (to film content).
