Kid D Interview
Kid D is one of Grime’s super producers who has been consistently releasing tracks this year and has recently dropped his fourth "Serious Choices” ft Novelist which will be on Kid D’s upcoming debut vocal album “Substance” with more features from some of the UK’s most heavyweight emcees such as Ghetts and Devlin.
Having produced for some of the biggest names in UK music; Wiley, Ghetts, Devlin, 67, Skepta and Hardy Caprio to name a few, Kid D is not a new name in the scene, carving a place for himself as one of the genre’s most poignant instrumentalists.
Wordplay Magazine caught up with Kid D to find out what makes him tick, here’s what he had to say;
Wordplay - So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
Kid D - I've always had a thing for sound, like when I was about 5 years old my dad brought drums back from Ghana and I just liked the sound of the bass that came from the end of the drum hahaha. I then started listening to a lot of Timberland and Dr.Dre tracks growing up which enhanced my vision for my own sound that I wanted to create, which is the mature grime (RnG) sound you have heard over the last decade.
WP - Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
KD - I like artists that spit realness, artists that create a sense of understanding and structure, so really and truly I want to work with artists in the future who hold that good understanding of how to constructively create good music.
WP - Your well known as a producer in the Grime scene and now you have made the cross over to being an emcee. How did that come about?
KD - I've always had a vocal vision for my sound that I feel only I can achieve by taking the time out to write for a selection of my own productions. I managed to accomplish that but more so just having ideas whilst producing on the spot, I tend to have lyrics just pop into my head almost like magic, I just click with my beats as any other producer artist would do once you really understand your sound and what you want to deliver.
WP - Your new track with Novelist is currently doing the rounds and we at Wordplay love it, is there plans for a solo album from you at some point?
KD - Yeah, I’m dropping my first debut vocal album entitled 'Substance' which actually features the 'Serious Choices' Featuring Novelist, The album will be dropping late 2020, no specific release date as of yet. I have some nice features on my album besides Novelist such as Ghetts.
WP - How would you describe your sound?
KD - I would describe my sound as Outer Galactic, haha. No one can make what I am making, how I make it, so i would say my sound holds a lot of authenticity and I would also describe my sound as Natural & Heavy, but I'll leave it for my fans to describe my sound I'll just make the music haha.
WP - What?s your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
KD - Being able to create a 12 track album with my voice on all the tracks that's my proudest moment for sure and mainly being able to produce all the tracks I vocal on, it truly is a blessing and I am grateful for it all, so, yeah, 'Substance' the album is my proudest moment and I can't wait for you to all hear it from track 1-12.
WP - Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
KD - Indeed i do, keep calm under any circumstance, maintain your health, drink lots of water, don't skip meals and avoid stress, stay focused on your music creativity and never let any words or actions steer you of track, that is key to being able to stay focused on your musical journey, you got this, all of you. Don't have doubts.
WP - Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
KD - Yeah, Y.K and Max Rock are two artists on 2 easy records, they are both very talented and you will be sure to hear some stuff from them this year.
WP - What album is on heavy rotation on your Spotify currently
KD - I literally listen to everything so I can't answer that one, I'm into all types of music that hold good frequencies.
WP - Name Three things you can?t live without?
KD - Water, My Hands & My ears.
WP - Thanks for your time and good luck with the new album.
KD - Thank you and thanks for having me.
